Scope Results

Today was the day to find out the biopsy results and determine the next course of treatment. They took 4 samples:

(A) Duodenum 3rd

(B) Body/antrum

(C) Distal esophagus (bottom of the esophagus)

(D) Proximal esophagus (top of the esophagus)

Samples A and B came back normal. Sample C came back with 47 eosinophils per high-powered field. Sample D came back with maximum>100 eosinophils per high-powered field.

To compare from his previous scope in July, Samples A and B were the same. Sample C the count was 71 eosinophils per high-powered field. Sample D had a count of 57 eosinophils per high-powered field.

Ideally and typically, there should be zero eosinophils in the esophagus. And the international standard for diagnosis is 15 or more. Clearly, Lucas is doing much worse and his counts are WAY high.

After much thought and discussion with family members, we have decided on the restricted diet. In addition to eliminating wheat, eggs, and corn, Lucas will also be off of dairy (milk), soy, fish, all nuts and oats. We will return in 12 weeks to re-scope. He will continue with the Nexium until at least the next scope. We are hoping that removing these other common allergens will be beneficial and will produce a clean scope. While we were there, we met with the dietician to helps us understand better what he can vs. what he can't have. I also picked up some samples of the different elemental formulas. Hopefully we won't have to go that route but just in case it won't hurt to allow him to try them.

Dr F wants us to weight checks at the pediatrician's office every 4 weeks to see if the new restrictions are causing any weight fluctuations.

We are trying to stay positive and provide Lucas with tons of encouragement. We know how difficult this will be for him (especially eliminating milk) but we've talked to him and he understands to certain degree. He's a tough kid and incredibly brave.

I also want to thank everyone who has taken the time to read our blog updates. In addition, I want to thank everyone who has prayed and/or kept us in your thoughts. You all have given me the strength to be strong for him. I hope you continue to pray/think about us. Your encouraging words mean a lot to us.
